- 1926 AMERICAN PORTRAIT ELEGANT WOMAN,
1926 AMERICAN PORTRAIT ELEGANT WOMAN, GILT FRAMEAmerican Pastel Portrait of Gertrude Lloyd, 1926. Signed and dated on lower right and set in gilded frame. A striking portrait of an elegant woman named Gertrude Lloyd (ca. 1870 - 1950s) set under glass in an impressive, lavishly gilded frame. Clearly, a woman of refined taste, Mrs. Lloyd wears a wrap of diaphanous periwinkle blue and silky white fabric as well as a double strand of lustrous pearls around her neck and matching pearl earrings. A vision of style and grace - with her silver tresses pulled back in a lovely updo, softly rouged cheeks, and coral pink lips - she poses with her torso in profile, one elegantly manicured hand held to her chest, and her attractive visage turned in dramatic fashion to gaze out at the viewer with engaging deep brown eyes. Complementing the portrait is an opulent gilded frame that is finely embellished with elaborate ornamentation featuring flowing garlands of floral blossoms and foliage. Size of sight view: 29.5" L x 24.25" W (74.9 cm x 61.6 cm) Size of frame: 35.7" L x 30.625" W (90.7 cm x 77.8 cm)

Condition:
This pastel portrait has not been examined outside the frame but appears to be in very nice condition. Signature and date are on lower right. Signature is difficult to decipher, but date is 1926. The frame has some expected surface wear, nicks/chips, fissures, a small area of loss/repair at the upper left corner that has been touched up with pigment, and a few cracks/losses to high-pointed areas of the ornamentation. Frame is fitted with a suspension wire which we would recommend replacing with new wire. Otherwise, glass is intact, and frame is quite attractive with extensive gilding and ornamentation.

- LARGE NAYARIT SAN SEBASTIAN REDWARE
LARGE NAYARIT SAN SEBASTIAN REDWARE SEATED FIGUREPre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, San Sebastian style, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A massive pottery figure depicted seated on a two-legged stool, leaning slightly forward with the right hand held to his mouth in a gesture most often associated with deep thought, sorrow, or even smoking. Enveloped in a vibrant red slip, the nude figure displays spread legs that bend at the knee, a broad rectangular torso, and the left arm resting on his thigh. The elongated head features a pair of slit-form eyes, a bulbous nose adorned with a septum ornament, a trio of hoop earrings, and an applied necklace around his neck. A helmet-like coiffure or headdress with vertical rows of plaited braids or cloth folds covers the top of his elongated head and down, stopped just above the nape of his neck. At the top center of the coiffure is a circular vent hole leading into his hollow body. Size: 7" L x 6" W x 15" H (17.8 cm x 15.2 cm x 38.1 cm)
Smoking was not merely a recreational pursuit in Pre-Columbian cultures but was performed by shamans for ritual and/or ceremonial purposes. It is known from ethnographic data that shamans would blow smoke over individuals in curing ceremonies, and in other contexts to symbolically produce clouds for rain. Shamans also smoked substances to induce altered states of consciousness, important in their mediation between the seen and unseen realms.
Clay figures like this one are the only remains that we have today of a sophisticated and unique culture in West Mexico - they made no above-ground monuments or sculptures, at least that we know of, which is in strong contrast to developments elsewhere in ancient Mesoamerica. Instead, their tombs were their lasting works of art: skeletons arrayed radially with their feet positioned inward, and clay offerings, like this one, placed alongside the walls facing inward, near the skulls. A large effigy like this one would most likely have flanked the entrance to a tomb in a way that archaeologists have interpreted as guarding.

- 17TH C. SPANISH COLONIAL IVORY SANTO
17TH C. SPANISH COLONIAL IVORY SANTO SLEEPING NINOSoutheast Asia, Philippines, Spanish Colonial Period, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. An endearing sculpture of the sleeping Christ child or Santo Nino Dormido - a popular santo during the Spanish Colonial period in the Philippines - hand-carved from ivory and painted in hues of tan, gray, brown, and pink. Wearing only a petite cloth over his groin, the pudgy infant lays on his back with his right hand held to his cheek and his left arm at his side - a pose reminiscent of the reclining Buddha. Both legs extend from his distended abdomen, bending at the knee as though kicking at his swaddle. His plump visage exhibits a serene countenance of closed eyes, a bulbous nose, a slight smile, and an adorable double chin. A thin brown coiffure crowns his head, sitting above a pair of naturalistically rendered ears. The holy child has been meticulously sculpted with every detail given careful attention, from the folds of flesh at each joint to the nailbeds of each finger and toe. Size: 5.7" L x 1.9" W (14.5 cm x 4.8 cm)
According to the Walters Museum of Art, "The Infant Christ was a favorite devotional image in Spain throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. Appealing to sentimental piety, these images, often carved in ivory were frequently found in convents. Small ivory images of the infant Christ were among the favored subjects commissioned by Spanish traders in the Philippines (a Spanish colony since 1565) from local carvers, most of whom (at least initially) were Chinese, members of a long-established merchant community."

- EGYPTIAN BRONZE ISIS-HATHOR WITH HARPOKRATES**Originally
EGYPTIAN BRONZE ISIS-HATHOR WITH HARPOKRATES**Originally Listed At $3000**
Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A beautiful leaded bronze sculpture of the goddess Isis-Hathor seated with her right hand held to her bare breast ready to suckle Harpokrates - the child form of Horus - seated in her lap, whom she supports with her right hand in a maternal manner. She wears an ankle-length sheath over her lower body that accentuates the contours of her form, her traditional vulture headdress with a projecting uraeus and a horned crown with a central sun disk she adopted from the goddess Hathor. Sitting across her lap, Horus is shown nude save for his uraeus crown and his incredibly long side lock of youth, indicating his divine and royal status. All is rendered in impressively preserved detail with incised lines delineating Isis's hair and facial features. As a cult figure from this time period, Isis is often shown as a mother goddess as we see here. A touching portrayal of a tender moment between mother and son. Size: 1.7" W x 5.5" H (4.3 cm x 14 cm); 6.3" H (16 cm) on included custom stand.
During the Ptolemaic period, Isis/Hathor, Serapis, and Horus/Harpocrates formed the Triad of Alexandria, a cult for worshipping the three deities that combined Greek and Roman gods with Egyptian ones. Ptolemy introduced this worship as a way to unify the cultures under his rule. Isis/Hathor was associated with childbirth and fertility and Horus/Harpocrates was the god of silence, secrets, and confidentiality.

Pre-Columbian, Central & Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz region, Aztec culture, Post Classic period, ca. 1200 to 1521 CE. A hand carved stone with a feline head- likely a jaguar, the king of beasts in Mesoamerican cultures. The long, cylindrical neck may have been a tenon joint for fitting into a larger sculpture or architectural element, although the petite size also suggests a hand held tool like a pestle. Aztec public architecture such as pyramids and temples featured many symbolic and artistic elements, tenons would project from walls and entrances to protect and symbolize religious beliefs. - ROMANO-EGYPTIAN BRONZE SISTRUM (RATTLE
ROMANO-EGYPTIAN BRONZE SISTRUM (RATTLE INSTRUMENT)Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 30 BCE to 300 CE. A bronze sistrum, type of hand held percussive rattle instrument, that consists of a slender handle with a pronged tip and a pair of jangling discs on a pin set between the arms. The head is bent downward, but originally it would have pointed upward. When shaken, the cymbal shaped discs produce a sound that can range from a soft clank to a loud jangling - although this one is a bit too bent to produce a proper rattle. The sound is complementary to that of a hissing snake when the sistrum is played. The sistrum was particularly important for the Egyptian worship of the goddesses Hathor and Bastet and was used in Greek and Roman religious rituals as well. Size: 3" W x 5" H (7.6 cm x 12.7 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.

PORTRAIT OF A FEMALE DIGNITARY (CONTINENTAL SCHOOL, EAR...PORTRAIT OF A FEMALE DIGNITARY (CONTINENTAL SCHOOL, EARLY 17TH CENTURY) CIRCLE OF FRANS POURBUS THE YOUNGER
Oil on canvas, unsigned. Dated 1615 when the sitter was 28 years old, as indicated by the Latin inscription, the coats of arms probably those of Halsingland, Sweden. The subject in red dress with white collar meticulously adorned with lace; her right hand held to her chest holding a small pink carnation, a beribboned rosary spilling over a bible stationed at her right side, her left hand holding her gloves down at her side. Fine gold jewelry adorns her hands and a large, jeweled pendant hangs at her chest. The later ebonized, gothic style frame with the gilded date 1628 (probably a misinterpretation of the Roman numeral 28).
The sitter bearing resemblance to Constance of Austria who gave birth in January of 1616. Constance was a daughter of Charles II of Austria and Maria Anna of Bavaria. Her paternal grandparents were Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor and Anna of Bohemia and Hungary (1503–1547). Anne was the only daughter of King Vladislaus II of Bohemia and Hungary and his wife Anne de Foix. Her maternal grandparents were Albert V, Duke of Bavaria and Anne Habsburg of Austria. Constance was also a younger sister of Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor, Margaret of Austria, Leopold V of Austria and Anna of Austria. Her older sister Anna was the first wife of King Sigismund III Vasa, King of Sweden and Poland. After her sisters death Constance and Sigismund were married on December 11, 1605.
The final photo of the lot is a documented portrait painting of a young teenage Constance by Frans Pourbus the Younger. The pose, articles, and clothing bear a close resemblance.

ROCK CRYSTAL CARVING OF A SEATED BUDDHA
QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY ? ??????????seated in dhyanasanawith the right hand held in bhumispara mudra, the left hand resting in dhyana mudra, the head with ushnisha and incised square curls, the benevolent face with incised urna, eyebrows and downcast eyes, wearing voluminous robes and chest detailed with necklace(1)8.1cm highProvenance: By descent- Private Scottish collection, Harrietfield, Kelso; previously from the family estate bought in 1847, Newton Don, Kelso.Newton Don lies in the lowland hills near Kelso, overlooking the Eden Water, a tributary of the Tweed. It owes its name to the Don family who first acquired the former manorial lands of Newton around 1648. Sir Alexander Don inherited the estate and baronetcy in 1776 and over the next forty years the family brought about significant change. The Dons sought to expand the pleasure grounds and to create a secluded, fashionable, country seat and by 1800, a visitor described the estate as a ‘remarkably pretty, cheerful place’. Between 1817 and 1820 renowned English architect Sir Robert Smirke (1781-1867) made considerable alterations to the eighteenth-century house, for which Robert Adam had prepared the original plans. Unfortunately, the transformation had strained the family coffers to such an extent that the estate was sold in 1847. Harrietfield was the farmhouse of the Newton Don estate home farm. It may have been built after the marriage of Lady Harriet Cunningham to Alexander Don in 1778, hence the name.Note: Compare to a similar rock crystal carving of Buddha, Burma, 18th-19th Century, sold at Sotheby's New York, 17 March 2015, lot 1102A
